According to The Mirror, Manchester United are set to conclude a deal for Japan striker Yoshinori Muto.
The ‘Japanese Messi’ currently plays for Mainz in the Bundesliga and any deal would be for around £12 million.
Muto only joined Mainz last summer for an undisclosed fee, but the club supposedly seems to be interested in selling for the right price. United boss Louis van Gaal has been tracking the international since the start of the season, in which he’s scored seven goals in 18 games.
Saido Mane is seen to be United’s main target though the Old Trafford hierarchy believes Muto has a more realistic chance of signing for the Red Devils.
The 23-year old striker has scored twice in 17 appearances for Japan since making his debut in 2014.
Muto came through FC Tokyo’s youth system and won the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award in his first season with the club before making the move to Germany last summer, with Chelsea rumoured to have been interested in bringing the striker to England earlier in 2015.
If the move goes through, Muto will become the second Japanese player to play for the Reds, after Shinji Kagawa.
