Manchester United may not have bought anyone in the January transfer window – but they could be saving up for the summer window.
Recognise the name Neymar Jr? Of course you do. Well, his father, a certain Neymar Sr, claims that an unnamed club went in for his son during last summer’s transfer window – and the touted figure is astonishing.
Coming via the Evening Standard, the Barcelona superstar’s father has stated that the club who bid for his son offered the Catalan club a healthy £145 million. The world-record fee paid for a player is £86 million, which Real Madrid paid Tottenham for Welsh winger Gareth Bale back in 2013; so had the transfer gone through, the record would have been smashed by £59 million.
Further to Neymar Sr’s claim over the bid for his superstar son, Spanish radio station Cadena COPE spoke to him and it was confirmed that the club who made the astonishing bid for the Brazilian was indeed Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United.
Just how different could United’s season have been, had they managed to prize Neymar away from Spain? The twenty-four year old has made 27 appearances for Barcelona so far this season – scoring 21 goals and registering 11 assists – Manchester United have scored 31 league goals.
We will have to wait and see if United make another bid for Barcelona’s tricky winger in the summer; but with £140 million already rejected, it would be an absolutely explosive transfer, if it were to happen.
