Manchester United will face bitter rivals Liverpool FC in the next round of the Europa League.
After overcoming FC Midtjylland and FC Augsburg respectively in the round of 32, the two north-west clubs will face each other – with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
Louis van Gaal’s men turned a possible nightmare into an absolute dream in their second leg against Midtjylland. 2-1 down from the first leg and with 14 first-team injuries including Wayne Rooney, David de Gea and Anthony Martial, things went from bad to worse for United when Sisto put the visitors 1-0 up on the night and 3-1 up on aggregate; but the men from Manchester upped the tempo and a dazzling display from Memphis coupled with a brilliant debut for Marcus Rashford saw United win 5-1 on the night and 6-3 on aggregate.
Liverpool’s round of 32 tie was less spectacular. A solid 0-0 in the away leg gave Klopp’s Reds a slight edge in the second leg, given that they had home advantage with all to play for. They progressed to the next round with a 1-0 win in front of their own fans, with James Milner grabbing victory with a penalty.
The first of the two games between United and Liverpool will be at Anfield on 10th March. The second leg at Old Trafford will take place a week later, on the 17th March.
