Manchester United have signed 18-year-old New Jersey native Matthew Olosunde.
The New York Red Bulls product was supposed to attend Duke University for their upcoming NCAA season, but Olosunde decided to back out to sign with United.
Duke University’s head coach John Kerr talked to Go Dukes earlier this year and commented on Olosunde saying:
Matthew is a fantastic player who is comfortable playing in the back or in midfield. He has wicked pace and has incredible defensive recovery speed. He has great one vs one instincts on both sides of the ball and will help us right away in a number of positions.
Olosunde can play both at the center back and the right back positions. In addition, Olosunde has made appearances for the USA’s international youth teams, playing with the U-15s, U-16s, and U-17s.
He made his debut for Manchester United’s Under-18 squad against Brighton and Hove Albion today. The 18-year-old apparently signed with United on January 29, but the teenager wasn’t able to join the side until now.
With Van Gaal giving youth squad members chances with the first team, Olosunde could eventually make a Premier League appearance this season.
