Schweinsteiger: “I could still help United”
Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger still believes that he can help the side this season if called upon by José Mourinho.
The 32-year-old has been frozen out of the first-team by the new United manager and sent to train with the Under-23 side, with the club looking to find suitors in the United States or China to take on his reported £200,000-a-week wages.
Mourinho himself has declared that five central midfielders rank ahead of him and that, even if injuries rule them out, he would rather pick youngsters to blood in the first-team setup.
However, ahead of his final appearance for Germany against Finland on Wednesday, Schweinsteiger echoed the words in the statement he issued last week in the pre-match press conference, reiterating his wish to continue playing for United.
He said:
My wish would be to continue playing for Manchester United. I have no personal problems with Jose Mourinho.
One thing is for sure: I’m not going to stop playing football.
I still believe in my own ability. I could still help Manchester United if given the chance.
Schweinsteiger also ruled out a move to Major League Soccer this season, given that the transfer window in the United States has already been closed.
The 32-year-old is widely seen as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, having dominated many a game with Bayern Munich and Die Mannschaft, but has yet to have that kind of influence at Old Trafford – and it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll ever get the chance to now.
Nevertheless, it is good to see that the Fußballgott is still willing to help the team and play for Mourinho if he is eventually called upon.
