Manchester United will go into the second-leg of their Europa League tie confident of making it to the next round, after a 3-0 win against St Etienne.
Much of the pre-match chatter was about the Pogba family, with Paul Pogba lining up against older brother Florentin for the first time in his professional career.
However Zlatan took centre stage and snatched the post-match headlines after an impressive treble. United are now in a comfortable position and but for a sizeable meltdown, should progress into the last 16.
Tonight’s result means United now have the opportunity to rest a number of first team players in the next leg, ahead of what is fast becoming a busy fixture schedule.
But Mourinho has already suggested that he will field a strong side in the second-leg next Wednesday. He said: “I don’t want football to punish me so I will go with a strong team in the second leg.”
One player United will be without is Ander Herrera, who will be suspended after picking up a booking tonight.
The Europa League is a competition United are capable of winning and it also provides an alternative route into the Champions League. With the top 4 places in the Premier League so hotly contested, United cannot afford to take the Europa League lightly.
