Lewandowski and Mbappe lined up as Griezmann alternatives
Manchester United have been heavily linked with a huge bid for Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann to come and lead the line alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic next season and long after the Swede has left the club.
However, the Independent have learned that a move for the Frenchman has been lessened in priority as Manchester United look to move forward with bids for Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe.
United have been long-time admirers of Lewandowski but have never been able to successfully prise the Polish striker away from Munich or Borussia Dortmund before them.
The decision to move away from Griezmann despite personal terms being agreed between the two parties is Atletico Madrid doing everything they can to prevent their star striker leave the club in a year where they move stadiums.
It’s believed that Jose Mourinho would have to sanction a move for Griezmann at his full release clause price which reportedly stands at £95m, meaning United would break the world transfer record in successive summers following the £89m arrival of Paul Pogba last year.
This has forced United to weigh up other options and once again, Lewandowski heads the shortlist. Having just signed a new contract with Munich, it remains to be seen how receptive the Bundesliga leaders will be to an approach.
Monaco’s talented teenage forward Kylian Mbappe also is mentioned as an alternative.
