Herrera to be offered new deal at Old Trafford
Ander Herrera is set to be offered a new £120,000-a-week contract by Manchester United, according to the Daily Mail.
The Spanish midfielder has become a key first-team figure under José Mourinho this season, and perhaps had the best game of his United career on Sunday as the Reds comprehensively beat Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Herrera set up the first goal, playing a wonderful ball through to Marcus Rashford early in the first half, before turning goalscorer in the second half, blasting the ball home via a deflection, all the while marking Eden Hazard out of proceedings.
Having joined United for £29 million from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2014, Herrera hadn’t really cemented his place in the side under Louis van Gaal despite being a fan favourite, and was understood to have doubts about his role in the side following Mourinho’s arrival at the club last summer.
However, those fears have been allayed and the 29-year-old, who has just over a year remaining on his current contract, has become a regular presence in the starting eleven throughout the course of the current season.
United have the option to extend his current contract by a further twelve months, but the club are happy to reward Herrera for his performances this season with an improved deal and are looking to start contract negotiations with the Spaniard and his representatives before the start of next season.
Herrera said back in February that he would be happy to being contract talks and the club expect that he will commit himself at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
This will be fantastic news for most United fans, as they see the Basque midfielder as a future club captain, with his energy and passion in midfield being key to some of the Reds’ best performances this season.
