Manchester United have done it! They are the Europa League champions, having beat Ajax 2-0 in an emotionally-tinged encounter at the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

After the tragic events in Manchester on Monday night, the Reds travelled as representatives of their city to face the side from Amsterdam. And they responded in the only way they could: winning. Putting in a spirited performance that nullified Ajax’s strengths and sucking the strength out of Peter Bosz’s men and bringing joy to a wonderful city.

United put out their expected eleven, with Chris Smalling and Juan Mata the only two surprise selections and took an early lead – Paul Pogba opening the scoring after his effort deflected off Davinson Sanchez and flew past the outstretched hand of Andre Onana.

Despite Ajax dominating possession, they failed to do much with it and United made them pay again early in the second half, Henrikh Mkhitaryan acrobatically flicking home after Smalling had knocked down a corner into the Armenian.

From then on, it was game over for Ajax, as they could not muster anything to salvage the final. As the final whistle went, joyous celebrations broke out amongst the United players and staff, and it was club captain Wayne Rooney that lifted the trophy to start the party in Stockholm.
