Former Manchester United and Everton player Phil Neville thinks Marcus Rashford is as good as Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.

Rashford broke into the United first team during the 2015-16 season and scored 8 goals in 18 games in all competitions; and has five goals in just eight games so far this season, so there are clear signs of improvement — something Phil Neville has picked up on:

Rashford is in the same bracket as those two [Mbappe and Dembele] – £100m-£150m players – he is every bit as good as those two and can be in the future because he is improving every season

Kylian Mbappe made his Monaco debut in the same season as Rashford first appeared for United, scoring one goal in 14 appearances in 2015-16.

Last season though, he became somewhat of a household name, scoring 26 goals in 44 appearances for the eventual winners of Ligue 1. He was courted by Europe’s top clubs this summer and chose to sign for PSG, whom he has supported since he was a child.

He is on loan there this season, playing with Neymar and Cavani in a menacing front three — and the club from the French capital have an obligation to buy him for €145 million next summer.

Phil Neville can’t see why Rashford isn’t talked about in the same way the Frenchman is:

Everybody praises Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe but nobody talks about Rashford in this country

Ousmane Dembele also made his breakthrough in the French top division, scoring 12 goals in 29 appearances for Rennes and becoming renowned for his fantastic dribbling ability, before moving to German side Borussia Dortmund.

Over two seasons, he made 50 appearances for the Bundesliga side and scored 10 goals, before being snapped up by Barcelona for an astonishing €105 million plus a reported €40 million add-ons.

Neville explained why he sees Rashford in the same bracket as the two Frenchmen:

Because he’s English we just say ‘he plays on the left wing, he’s OK’. He is up there with Dembele and Mbappe, who also play on either wing. People say you have to play Rashford as a centre-forward but you can play him anywhere because he is good enough.

He broke in under Louis van Gaal and set the world on fire, in his second season under Jose Mourinho everyone thought he wouldn’t play but he did in all the big games. Now he is adding goals to his game and he can be absolutely world class.

Rashford is currently competing with a host of fantastic players for a spot in United’s starting eleven every week; Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard — with the addition of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to be a test for him yet again upon the Swede’s return to fitness.

Rashford scored twice against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night and his attentions will now turn to United’s next game, a Premier League fixture against Southampton.
