United to offer De Gea a new contract
Manchester United are preparing to enter talks with goalkeeper David de Gea over a new contract, in order to ward off interest from La Liga and Champions League holders Real Madrid.
The Spanish goalkeeper’s current contract expires in the summer of 2019, so United want to add some more years to that deal so that he doesn’t enter the final year of his contract this summer, which would make it easier for Real Madrid to sign him.
According to the Independent, De Gea is comfortable in Manchester and would be open to signing a new contract to extend his stay with the Old Trafford club.
De Gea came perilously close to joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2015 — a deal had been agreed for the United number one to swap clubs with Real ‘keeper Keylor Navas, and both players had signed contracts with their new clubs, but Real took too long to register the transfer with FIFA and missed the deadline, hence De Gea is still at United now.
The Spaniard joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has since made 277 appearances for the Red Devils.
De Gea is widely considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world and Jose Mourinho is reportedly hoping that he will have signed a new contract by the turn of the year.
