Manchester United star Juan Mata has been discussing his role in the team with the club’s official website.
The Spain international has enjoyed a positive start to the season and has been in good form. The opening stages of the campaign have been hugely impressive for United, as they sit in 2nd place on the Premier League table.
Mata is regarded as a key player for United, and has a good relationship with Jose Mourinho. However, as confirmed by the experienced Spaniard, he is currently being played in a different role to what he would consider as his best position.
The former Chelsea man answered the questions over what he perceived his best position to be, but also spoke positively of what it’s like on the right wing.
Let’s say offensive midfielder. But, obviously, I am playing more now on the right-wing, when I try to come inside and create space for my team-mates, and with the overlaps of Matteo [Darmian], Antonio [Valencia] or Ashley [Young], it makes things easier for me.
And you know, it’s this kind of freedom that allows me to be in touch with the ball, that’s where I feel comfortable. As much time as I have the ball, I feel better and I feel that my game grows and that’s what I try to do.
I consider myself as this kind of attacking midfielder, trying to find the gaps between the opposition midfielders and defenders and produce what the team needs between the lines.
