Manchester United have suffered yet another injury set-back, after Phil Jones limped out of England’s friendly against world champions Germany on Friday night.
Jones, who has been in fine form for club and country this season, was playing well against the current World Cup and Confederations Cup holders, but was forced off with an injury in the first half.
He appeared to pick up an injury around the quarter of an hour mark against Germany, but soldiered on for a while, and made a fantastic goal-saving header on the line to prevent Manchester City’s Leroy Sane from opening the scoring for the visitors at Wembley.
That was to be his final contribution though, as he then limped off to be replaced by Joe Gomez of Liverpool.
It remains to be seen just how serious or how long-term the injury is, but it appeared to be a problem with his thigh; Jose Mourinho will be hoping that his centre-back simply took a hard knock to the leg, rather than having him suffer with any muscular problem, which would no doubt keep him out of action for a few weeks.
United’s next three games come against Newcastle (H, PL), FC Basel (A, CL) and Brighton (H, PL) — Jones would certainly be a useful player to have around for those fixtures.
