Manchester United suffered a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United yesterday and defender Phil Jones feels his side deserved to lose the game.
Matt Ritchie scored the winner late on to consign United to a second consecutive loss on their travels after losing at Spurs a couple of weeks earlier.
United struggled to cope with Newcastle’s heart and desire throughout the game and were deservedly ending up on the losing side of the game.
The result coupled with Liverpool’s win at the win saw their gap to second place cut to just two points which is a real concern for Jose Mourinho as the race to finish in the top four heats up.
Jones has been a key player for United this season in helping them to keep the most clean sheets to date and returned to the side this weekend following an illness which kept him out of the Huddersfield game.
He spoke to the media following the match.
We started too slow and couldn’t get to the rhythm of our game.
For whatever reason, we weren’t good enough today and we’ll have to play a lot better than that if we’re going to kick on and improve.
You know, they didn’t (create a lot of chances) even when the crowd were on their feet and had a few half chances, (even though) the crowd think it’s sort of a one-on-one.
He continued and went on to add.
A lot of teams around us keep drawing, losing points and there is a lot still to play for.
It was a disappointing day, but we have to go again. That’s all we can do, that’s all we know. We’re disappointed, we’re devastated, but we have to improve.
