Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is set to shake up his defensive line ahead of next season with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones set to be let go, according to the Mirror.
The United manager is keen to improve his side’s defensive shape having not been impressed with Jones and Smalling in recent weeks.
The pair weren’t at their best as United lost 1-0 at Newcastle United in the Premier League as the race for the top four heated up with Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea all involved with United in the race.
The Red Devils do currently have the best defensive record in the league but the performance at the weekend highlighted that they can still be vulnerable in this area.
United didn’t spend big in the window on a defender which was something which Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool did, spending £75 million and £56 million respectively.
There have been links with both Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane ahead of the summer but it will take a large sum to prise either away from their current clubs.
