Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League this evening as they succumbed to a shock home defeat against Sevilla.
The Red Devils headed back to Old Trafford having held out for a 0-0 draw in Seville but were stunned by the Spanish side, who have secured their progression into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Jose Mourinho’s approach to the match was somewhat peculiar, with United sitting deep in large parts and failing to take advantage of a number of missed chances on Sevilla’s part.
However, the game changed when Vincenzo Montella introduced Wissam Ben Yedder for Sevilla.
The Frenchman netted a well-taken low drive beyond David de Gea to give his side the advantage near the closing stages of the game, before he nodded home only minutes later to double the visitors’ lead.
Romelu Lukaku scored a late consolation for United but it was not enough on the night, as the Red Devils were eliminated 2-1 on aggregate.
Here are our Manchester United player ratings.
David de Gea - 5
Made some smart stops but should have done better with Ben Yedder’s second of the evening.
Antonio Valencia - 4
Struggled to cope with the intensity of the clash and had a poor game by his usually high standards.
Chris Smalling - 4
Spurned a good chance for United and looked extremely shaky at the back throughout. A poor performance.
Eric Bailly - 6
Could have done better for Ben Yedder’s opener but made a sublime, goal-saving tackle earlier on in the match. He was one of the better performers.
Ashley Young - 5
Had a largely indifferent evening, failing to impact proceedings at either end of the pitch.
Marouane Fellaini - 6
Was quite clearly unfit and it showed in large periods. He struggled with the intensity of the match but still fashioned a good chance before being withdrawn.
Nemanja Matic - 5
Was not his usual self in the middle and struggled to make an impact on the match as Steven N’Zonzi bossed it.
Jesse Lingard - 5
Full of energy but devoid of end product.
Alexis Sanchez - 4
Flattered to deceive. He worked hard but was extremely poor on the ball.
Marcus Rashford - 4
Failed to make an impact on the match and never truly looked up for it.
Romelu Lukaku - 6
A reasonable performance from Lukaku. Tried to hold the ball up and netted United’s only goal. He did spurn a good chance prior to that, though.
Substitutes
Paul Pogba – 4: Turned in a really poor cameo as he gave the ball away often.
Anthony Martial – 5: Tried to add energy and guile to the attack but his efforts were insufficient.
Juan Mata – 5: Looked to create but Sevilla remained firm.
