# Should David de Gea stay at Old Trafford?

With Manchester United’s recent run of good form, coupled with dropped points from their nearest league rivals, it appears increasingly likely that Champions League football will be returning to Old Trafford next season. If this turns out to be the case, then it will be an intriguing summer in terms of the transfer window. Many United fans will be keen to see Louis van Gaal spend big again, bringing in more world class players to bolster the squad, for the 2015/16 season. However, the real conundrum will be where David De Gea is playing, come September.

Not for the first time, Spanish giants Real Madrid are unapologetically very interested in a top United star. Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, a feeling of déjà vu is coming over United fans at the minute. It’s obvious why De Gea could be lured to Madrid. Go back to his home country, take over from Spain’s legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas and become the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

However, there are many great causes for him stay, bearing in mind what he had to overcome early in his United career. He received heavy criticism in his first couple of seasons from the English media, but United still strongly backed him and he has overcome this early stumbling block with maturity. His performances have seen him become a top goalkeeper in English football and he is on course to be named United’s player of the year, for the second consecutive year.

De Gea has become a real fan favourite, with chants about him being regularly echoed from the Stretford End. He has achieved this and more, at the tender age of 24. He has all the attributes to become the greatest goalkeeper in United’s illustrious history, surpassing the greats of Peter Schmeichel, Alex Stepney and Edwin Van Der Sar. It is imperative that the powers at United, make keeping De Gea, their number one priority this summer.

Even if Madrid were to offer Bale as part of the deal, it would certainly soften the blow, but losing De Gea would be devastating to United. Great goalkeepers are like stardust and history shows that. Over the past 25 years, how many truly great goalkeepers have there been in world football? Six, maybe seven at most? De Gea is well on his way to joining this list and if United want to build another dynasty over the next 10 or 15 years, then it is absolutely vital that the Spaniard should stay at Old Trafford.
