David De Gea has had an undeniably magnificent season between the sticks for United, boasting 10 clean sheets – one more than Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois – and has now been rewarded.
The Spanish number one has been shortlisted for PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year – alongside Harry Kane, Eden Hazard and Phillipe Coutinho. The last time a player won both awards was 2013 when Gareth Bale scooped the prizes, emulating Andy Gray and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Manchester United hold the record for the highest number of players to have won the PFA Player of the Year award (11). Robin van Persie in his debut season was the last player to win the award in United colours, with Rooney taking the prize 2 years previous to that.
No Spaniard has ever won the standard Player of the Year Award and the last goalkeeper to do so was Peter Shilton in 1977/78. The Young Player of the Year Award has been won by a Spaniard in Cesc Fabregas’ time with Arsenal. The only goalkeeper to win it, however, was Mervyn Day of West Ham United in 1974/75.
