# Carrick, Rojo, Jones and Blind all out injured

**Michael Carrick, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Daley Blind have all been ruled out of Saturday’s battle at Stamford Bridge, as confirmed by manager Louis van Gaal.**

The Dutchman confirmed the quartet would all be unavailable to take on league leaders Chelsea during a weekly interview with MUTV. However, he confirmed Luke Shaw is match fit and available for selection, meaning he is likely to start at left-back for the first time since last month’s FA Cup sixth round defeat to Arsenal.

“Shaw I think is training for a lot of weeks already so he can play,” he said. “Van Persie is another story – this is the first week he has trained with us, with the first team, but maybe we have to think about him.”

Holding midfielder Carrick sustained an injury on Sunday during a convincing 4-2 victory over Manchester City at the Theatre of Dreams, but has been unable to recover in time to face Jose Mourinho’s West London outfit.

As a result, captain Wayne Rooney is expected to return to a holding midfield role – despite significant improvements in recent weeks when deployed as a lone striker. With Robin van Persie still uncertain for the clash, the out-of-favour Radamel Falcao is expected to lead the line for the Red Devils, which could prove to be the most important 90 minutes of his Manchester career.

“Carrick is injured, he cannot play,” the 63-year-old confirmed at the Aon Training Complex. “But not only Michael Carrick – Daley Blind, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo cannot play.

“It cannot be worse because it’s two players in the left central defensive positions, and Jonny Evans is still suspended. Daley Blind and Michael Carrick play in the holding position in midfield, so I have to change my line-up a lot against Chelsea.”

The manager then revealed that all injuries were sustained during the Manchester derby, but were not noticed immediately. He added: “They are all from the game against City. Blind played on because he always wants to, but the tackle from Kompany was the reason.

“Jones injured himself in the second half. Rojo, he was complaining \[of a knock\] after the match, and Carrick was also off. We had a big hope that Blind and Jones could reach this game but they can’t.

“Normally I always put players in the line-up if they’ve played for the opponent, so I think Mata shall play. I think Chelsea will be satisfied with a draw, but of course they want to beat us and we want to beat them.”

With Jonny Evans still unavailable, Paddy McNair or Tyler Blackett are expected to start alongside Chris Smalling in the heart of the defence.
