The 2013/14 season was one to forget for all Manchester United supporters, proving the ‘Chosen One’ David Moyes was not the man to continue in the role or grow in the position Sir Alex Ferguson left vacant.
Being the manager of a club with the reputation and character of Manchester United is not an easy task, considering it’s successful history and the expectations it has lived up to. Former Preston North End favourite Moyes’ was sacked even before the completion of his first season, and subsequently replaced by Ryan Giggs – one of the most Prolific Wingers of all times.
The Manchester United fanbase was more than happy to see Giggs fill in for the departing struggler, but does the Welshman possess the talents to become a permanent manager at the Theatre of Dreams so soon? Some believed it was fair to make Giggs our manager, while others were sceptical of his prospects, including myself.
Assigning Louis van Gaal bought a sense of belief to all supporters of the Red nation across the globe, especially after the incredible World Cup campaign he endured with the Netherlands, which included overcoming current champions Spain in a formidable fashion.
A somewhat average team on paper was able to finish third due to his tactical intelligence and risk of playing certain players out of position in order to gain the best for his team. The Dutchman boasted earlier spells with the likes of FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Ajax, which meant he was certainly someone with a good amount of experience in the top leagues of club football.
In his first interview as Manchester United manager, he stated that the club needed to be rebuilt, and that this season our present the challenge of returning the club to the elitist European competition – The Champions League.
Spending over £100 million, while also bringing in names including Radamel Falcao and Andy Kellett on loan, van Gaal has achieved what he promised in his very first interview. Manchester United are back in the Champions League and if they finish fourth, they will face their European play-off on 7th August.
The belief is back. The Stretford End has regained it’s lost voice, and supporters will now hope title number 21 can be achieved under the guidance of the Dutchman.
