# Manchester United vs Arsenal: Last five meetings

**For a long time, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the matches between Manchester United and Arsenal often determined the destiny of the Premier League title.**

Those matches were an epic battle for English footballing supremacy and as a result they were feisty and often controversial affairs. Although the recent encounters haven’t reached anywhere near that level, there is still an underlying rivalry which makes them as intriguing as ever.

**Manchester United 1-2 Arsenal (09/03/2015)**

Manchester United’s wait for a 12th FA Cup would go on for another year thanks to former striker Danny Welbeck, who netted the winner on his first return to Old Trafford. The FA Cup sixth round tie was a tense match which represented both team’s last realistic chance of winning a trophy this season. Arsenal took the lead through Nacho Monreal but United struck back with Wayne Rooney heading home an Angel Di Maria cross. With the match in the balance, it was a mistake which settled the tie, and in Arsenal’s favour. A careless backpass from Antonio Valencia allowed Welbeck to race through and secure the Gunners a place in the semi-finals and a first win at Old Trafford since 2006. Di Maria was sent off after a confrontation with the referee and United were left with a season seemingly in pieces. Louis van Gaal’s side responded to their cup disappointment by embarking on a six game winning run which helped secure a top four place and resurrect their season.

**Arsenal 1-2 Manchester United (22/11/2014)**

United rode their luck at the Emirates but also produced a perfect smash and grab raid and counter-attacking display. Fielding an inexperienced side containing a central defensive pairing of Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett made the result even more impressive. United had David de Gea to thank after the Spaniard made a couple of crucial saves including a fantastic stop against Jack Wilshire. A calamitous own goal gave Louis van Gaal’s side the lead before Wayne Rooney scored what is now a customary counter-attacking finish against Arsenal to secure the three points. Olivier Giroud scored late on for Arsenal but United held on and could even have scored more on the break.

**Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United (12/02/2014)**

If you ever wanted a game to symbolise the declining importance that this fixture now has on the destiny of the title, then this was it. It was a rather dull affair with both sides seemingly happy to share the spoils. Robin van Persie missed United’s best chance early on when he was put through on goal. In truth though a draw was a fair result. Arsenal would go on to pip Everton to the final Champions League spot and finish in fourth, whereas United would stumble to their worst ever Premier League position with seventh place costing David Moyes his job.

**Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal (10/11/2013)**

Robin van Persie scored his obligatory goal against Arsenal, this time electing to celebrate after refusing to do so in the previous two matches against his former club. A first half header from the Dutchman ultimately proved enough for Moyes’ United to extend Arsenal’s winless sequence at Old Trafford into a seventh year, and also keep the Red Devils in the race for a top four spot.

**Arsenal 1-1 Manchester United (28/04/2013)**

Sir Alex Ferguson’s final touchline tussle with Arsene Wenger failed to rekindle memories of the famous battles of yesteryear. Perhaps emphasising the decline of Wenger’s Arsenal was the hostile reception that Robin van Persie received upon his first visit to the Emirates as a United player. With United and van Persie arriving as champions, the constant jeers toward van Persie highlighted both the sense of betrayal the fans felt but also Arsenal’s shortcomings. Whilst United and van Persie were offered a guard of honour, his former colleagues were going eight years without a title.

The game lacked the genuine spice of previous encounters but van Persie was able to score against his former club, keeping his cool from the penalty spot, and earn United a draw by cancelling out Theo Walcott’s second minute opener.
