David de Gea wins consecutive awards double

David de Gea became the man of the hour, as he celebrated winning the Players’ Player of the Year and the Fans’ Player of the Year for the second year running

The 24-year-old has consistently impressed for the Red Devils, and had been highlighted as a firm favourite for the awards. Despite rumours suggesting he could be shipped off to Real Madrid in the summer to return to his family, supporters were able to celebrate his contributions throughout the season, and rewarded him for his efforts.

Revealing that he voted for fellow Spaniard Juan Mata as his best performer of the season, de Gea claimed the award after continuing the high standards that also saw him win the award during the 2013/14 season.

“I want to say thank you to my team-mates, they have been fantastic this season and I love them,” he said. “We have a great dressing room and I would like to say thank you very much,” the goalkeeper added after being presented with his award by club captain Wayne Rooney.

When asked about his favourite save of the season, he replied: “I think for the goalkeepers any save is important to help the team. I am very pleased [with the award] and I only want to say thank you to my team-mates.”

He was later awarded the final accolade of the evening, as voted for by supporters. The goalkeeper had made history last season by becoming the first ever goalkeeper to win the prestigious award, and has now become the first player to win the award back-to-back since Cristiano Ronaldo from 2006 to 2008.

The award was presented by Louis van Gaal, alongside supporter Stephen Cross, and the Dutchman spoke highly of his number one. I’m very proud of you. You have developed yourself more than any other player at Manchester United. I agree with the voice of the fans. Congratulations you deserve it.”

De Gea added his delight of winning the award once again, continuing: “Like the boss said before we have the best fans in the world and I want to say thank you to everyone. They are always behind us and travel everywhere – it’s fantastic for us.

“I am young and I try to improve in every training session and every game. Everyone always wants to improve and I think I have improved a lot.”

David de Gea had featured in every minute of the club’s campaign until he was substituted with an injury late in the recent 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
