# Juan Mata awarded Goal of the Season

**Juan Mata scooped the Goal of the Season award at the Manchester United awards night, after his tantalising volleyed winner against Liverpool in March.**

In a fixture which many hail as Mata’s best game for the Reds, he struck twice to overcome the Merseyside outfit at Anfield, commencing a successful run of form during a tough set of fixtures.

A shortlist of 10 soon became four, and Mata deservedly took the award after supporters voted for their winner on Twitter.

Angel Di Maria’s lobbed effort against Leicester City early in the season took second place, while Ander Herrera’s long-range strike against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup, and an acrobatic volley from Wayne Rooney against Aston Villa completed the top four.

Mata received 59% of the votes, and was delighted with the award. “I am very happy,” he said. “It was a very important moment in the game. It was a great pass from Angel \[Di Maria\], he saw my run and I just tried to take it first time – luckily it went in.

“As soon as you play against Liverpool at Anfield or Old Trafford you feel it’s a different game. It’s my best day since I came here. It was an important win and a very good moment.

“We want to keep improving,” he added. “We did what we had to do this season which was to get back into the Champions League. But I have always known this club fighting for trophies and next season we will try to win every competition we are in.”

Juan Mata has scored nine goals in 32 league appearances this season for the Reds.
