# Seven potential David de Gea replacements

**A goalkeeper merry-go-round is set to occur this summer, with David de Gea at the centre of it. The Spaniard is set to move to Real Madrid with Spanish reports stating that they’ve agreed personal terms.**

Louis van Gaal has said that United have plans if de Gea is to leave. “We have a list of goalkeepers who can replace him because we have to be organised always,” he suggested. I try to second guess the names that are on the Dutchman’s list and if they might have a future at Old Trafford.

**Hugo Lloris**

The captain of the French national team has expressed his desire to play in the Champions League, something he hasn’t experienced since leaving Lyon in the summer of 2012. When looking back at the £12 million fee that was spent by Tottenham, it was a brilliant buy by considering how quickly he adapted to the Premier League. Some of Hugo Lloris’ best attributes is his acceleration and anticipation, which has been displayed through his sweeper-keeper style, a role that has rose in importance for the modern-day keeper. Despite his slim frame, he’s able to dominate lofted balls into his box due to having confidence, and a high starting position. A stumbling block within a potential deal is the four years he has left on his contract. This would suggest that Daniel Levy, Spurs’ chairman, will demand a transfer fee that would make a significant profit for the club, something he’s done in the past with the likes of Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric and of course Gareth Bale.

**Petr Cech**

Chelsea’s number two is set to end his 11-year spell with the Champions as he’s been given permission to talk to other clubs, according to the keeper’s agent. When questioned over Petr Cech’s future, Jose Mourinho replied: “If it’s in my hands he would never go to a big club, who are candidates for the Premiership, I would never let him go, but it’s not in my hands.” Cech’s consistency and experience at the top level would be a welcomed addition for any team in the world, so If United are able to approach him over a potential deal, expect competition from the likes of Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain for his signature.

**Bernd Leno**

Bernd Leno, 23, is another quality, young German goalkeeper who has had four years of Bundesliga experience with Bayer Leverkusen, as well as participating in the Champions League during three of those seasons. He made his Bundesliga debut at the age of 19 and also became the youngest goalkeeper to play in the Champions League, when he faced Chelsea during the 2011/12 season. It has been reported that Leno has a £13 million buy-out clause in his current contract, a very affordable price for a promising keeper, who’s still on the search for his first German cap.

**Asmir Begovic**

Stoke are in a very similar situation as United are, in relation to having their number one goalkeeper entering the last year of their contracts. Mark Hughes will be holding contract talks with Asmir Begovic after their last game of the season, against Liverpool on Sunday. The Bosnian International has been linked with United along with a number of different clubs during his time with the Potter’s. If Stoke and Begovic aren’t able to agree over a new contract and do part ways, I don’t think it will be the end of the world, as they have Butland waiting in the wings. Jack Butland has played in Stoke’s last three games, and I believe he should be given the chance to become the first choice goalkeeper at a Premier League club. If Begovic was to make the move to United, it’s a question of whether he’s able to cope with the pressure and expectation of playing for a big club, who’s playing at the highest level of competition.

**Samir Handanovic**

The Inter Milan goalkeeper, who also has one year left on his contract, has been linked with moves away from the San Siro, in search of Champions League football. Roma is one club that has been linked with the Slovenian, as they start their search for a potential replacement for Morgan De Sanctis, as it’s likely he’ll retire at the end of next season. Handanovic will want to forget his last match as he made an uncharacteristic error, by letting Alvaro Morata’s tame long-range effort roll over the top of his outstretched hand, during a Serie A match against Juventus.

**Jasper Cillessen**

It was inevitable that the Ajax keeper was going to be linked with United, as Van Gaal picked him as his number one for the Netherlands during the World Cup. I personally believe that Van Gaal will have candidates higher up the pecking order for potential replacements, over Jasper Cillessen. Also, Ajax’s Director of Football Marc Overmars has stated that Cillessen is “not for sale, not even for 25 million euros”. This would suggest that it would take all of the money from the potential De Gea deal to buy Cillessen, who is older and isn’t at the same level of the Spaniard.

**Victor Valdes**

The anterior cruciate ligament injury Victor Valdes suffered put an end to his last and possibly best Barcelona season in terms of personal performances. Now we’ll have to see if he can get back to his best after a lengthy period recovering from the knee injury. Valdes won’t settle for being a long-term back-up, and will be looking to take any chance he gets to become the new number one.

Van Gaal will be looking to bring in a goalkeeper who has the ability of being his number one, so he can have the quality and depth within the goalkeeping position. Many managers now seem to make agreements with keepers before the start of the season, and split their responsibilities for different competitions. This was the case with Claudio Bravo, who played La Liga matches, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who played Copa Del Rey and Champions League matches, for Barcelona this season. Will this occur at Old Trafford or will one goalkeeper come out on top for all competitions?
