# French reports promising for Morgan Schneiderlin capture

**United’s chase for a midfield general goes on as this week Infosport+ revealed that a certain French midfielder is close to joining Manchester United.**

Morgan Schneiderlin was long thought to be moving to Arsenal, until Infosport+ claimed it is actually Manchester United that the player is interested in. The channel, which we understand to be a branch of Canal+, has previously correctly predicted Sagna’s move to Manchester City and Mathieu Debuchy’s move to Arsenal, giving them some credibility.

However, they suggest that the club will only pursue Schneiderlin if they fail to land their number one target, Bastian Schweinsteiger. It is well known that Louis van Gaal is well interested in the Bayern veteran from his management days there and that he is looking for midfield reinforcements this summer.

It does seem strange though, that Louis van Gaal and the United board would be more interested in a 30-year-old midfielder, rather than a 24-year-old Premier League proven one, given their transfer policy to not sign players over the age of 27. Along with this, United officials are known to never publically announce transfer interest.

Earlier this year, Schneiderlin claimed: “I think my decision is made. The goal is to stay in England. It is a championship that I like and where I have a lot of fun.” He added that: “If I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League.”

Schneiderlin is thought to be valued at around £25 million with the Saints boss Ronald Koeman keen on striker Javier Hernandez who could be used in a swap deal. Schweinsteiger, on the other hand, is thought to be available for just £10 million due to the fact he has one-year left on his contract.

The club could always opt to sign both, but with rumours that Ilkay Gundogan is also close to a move, it is unlikely that this will be the case. What is likely though, is that United could have a somewhat new look midfield come the start of next season.
