# Reds battle with Chelsea over Miranda

**Manchester United and Chelsea are locked in a battle to sign Atletico Madrid defender Miranda, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.**

Brazil international Miranda has once again had a standout season in La Liga, and Atletico are concerned that they will have to sell the 30-year old as his contract runs out next summer. Miranda has held talks with Atletico officials over his future, and told friends and team-mates that he could possibly be leaving the Vicente Calderon.

United have been linked with numerous centre-backs so far, as Louis van Gaal looks for a lynchpin to play alongside either Chris Smalling or Phil Jones in the centre of defence. Miranda would fit the bill, and he even thought he would be joining United last summer, as he reportedly said farewell to his Atletico team-mates after their Champions League defeat to city rivals Real Madrid.

However, Atletico’s asking price of £22 million prevented any deal from being agreed and Los Colchoneros will certainly ask for a lower fee this time around, with Miranda’s contract situation dictating matters.

Chelsea have come into the picture as Jose Mourinho’s hopes of signing Real’s Raphael Varane fade. Atletico have reportedly offered Toby Alderweireld to the Blues in the hopes of diverting attention away from Miranda, but Mourinho has made it clear that Miranda would be the ideal option.

It is highly unlikely that Miranda can be guaranteed a starting place at Stamford Bridge, with John Terry and Gary Cahill both having superb Premier League seasons. However, with Atletico looking to resign Filipe Luis, it seems that Mourinho might have the upper hand over van Gaal in this transfer battle.
