# Aymeric Laporte commits future to Athletic Bilbao

**Manchester United transfer target Aymeric Laporte has ended rumours of a possible move to the Premier League, by committing his future to Athletic Bilbao with a new contract.**

The 21-year-old was hotly linked to a move across Europe with the Red Devils interested in a number of central defenders, but Louis van Gaal will now have to look elsewhere for their next summer signing.

Laporte has committed his future to the Basque club until 2019, having made an impressive 49 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit this season. Guiding his side to a seventh placed finish from the back, qualification to the Europa League is guaranteed – meaning Laporte can stay on home soil in order to achieve European action throughout the next season.

The France Under-21 centre-back is now unlikely to draw attention from Manchester United – who seem set on the services of Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi, after earlier hopes of Bundesliga duo Mats Hummels and Dante were briskly dashed.

Managing a single assist during the last season, the central defender is also capable of fulfilling a role at left-back, which would have provided cover to United’s Luke Shaw while allowing Daley Blind to remain in a midfield role as desired.

Laporte has been noticed for his talents in passing, tackling and making pivotal interceptions, having lost to Barcelona in the final of the Copa del Rey after a notable run of form. He is only the second French nation to ever represent his current club.
