Phil Jones has recently signed a new contract with Manchester United, keeping him at the club until at least the summer of 2019. He joined from Blackburn under Sir Alex Ferguson and has played in midfield, as well as at right-back and centre back. Earlier in his Old Trafford career, he was likened to Duncan Edwards – and whilst that hasn’t materialised for Jones yet, he has had some incredible moments in red, white and black.
1) vs Real Madrid, 2013
This two-legged Champions League tie against Real Madrid eventually ended in heartbreak but Phil Jones was phenomenal. His strong performance in midfield and defence saw him single-handedly keep Cristiano Ronaldo from being his usual explosive self as well as neutralising Angel Di Maria, his now team mate at Old Trafford. Take a look:
2) vs Arsenal, May 2015
This tackle on Olivier Giroud came in United’s final home game of the 2014/15 season and whilst it wasn’t a particularly important one, but from a United fan’s point of view it is fairly amusing and it definitely represents what Phil Jones is about – power
3) vs Shaktar Donetsk, December 2013
Phil Jones isn’t renowned for his goalscoring – he usually leaves that to Chris Smalling, who loves to pop up in the box at set-pieces, but this goal is technically sound and probably would be expected to come from a midfielder or striker!
4) vs Manchester City, April 2013
Scoring against your local rivals is always something special, and that’s exactly what Jones did here. It doesn’t seem to be too much of a coincidence that his best performances came under Sir Alex Ferguson so hopefully Louis van Gaal’s willingness to give the defender a new contract means he will get him back to his very best
5) vs Arsenal, May 2015
Again involving Olivier Giroud and again coming during the last Old Trafford action of 2014/15, this tackle was more crucial – it probably prevented a goal – but less orthodox than the previous one. Phil, take a bow son!
