# Striker on his way?

The United squad took part in their first training session back yesterday, and there was a notable omission; not a player, but rather, a number.

The infamous No.9 was not assigned to any of the players’ training wear, possibly alluding to the expectation of an imminent arrival to pull on the famous No.9 shirt. Indeed, this shirt number is traditionally reserved for strikers: Andy Cole, Dimitar Berbatov, Louis Saha and Bobby Charlton all had the number emblazoned on their shirts. Most recently, Radamel Falcao adopted the shirt number, but his departure and United’s reluctance to hand anyone in their current crop of players this number has United fans anticipating an arrival.

Names such as Cavani, Muller and Kane have all circulated the rumour mill; this recent revelation will only serve to heighten the intensity of these rumours. Indeed, assistant manager and United legend Ryan Giggs has openly spoken of The Red Devils’ desire to sign a striker.

There has been a relative lack of activity in the window so far, but this apparently innocuous omission of the No.9 jersey must suggest the arrival of a marquee striker.
