# Jan Oblak in the frame as de Gea replacement

Manchester United have their eyes set on Atlético Madrid’s Jan Oblak to replace David de Gea if he leaves Old Trafford for Real Madrid this summer.

This is according to Marco Ruiz of AS, who says that Louis van Gaal is a big fan of the Slovenian stopper, and considers him to be a bigger prospect than De Gea. Van Gaal will be looking to use the €35m fee United hope to get from the sale of de Gea to Atlético’s city rivals to purchase the 22-year old.

Ruiz goes on to say that the Reds have made a tentative enquiry regarding Oblak, but Atletico are not willing to sell him unless his €45m release clause is met. Ruiz also says that Oblak is happy at the club, and any move will depend on United reaching an agreement with Atlético.

Oblak joined Atlético from Portuguese champions Benfica last summer for a fee of £12.6 million, after displacing Artur as the number one keeper and producing some excellent performances. Despite being benched for the first half of the season after his move to Los Colchoneros, he eventually displaced Miguel Moyà as the main man between the sticks at the Vicente Calderón, coming up with some scintillating performances, especially over two legs against Real in last season’s Champions League quarter-final.

Other keepers that have been mooted for a move to Old Trafford include Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen, but with Oblak’s name now in the frame, he might become the frontrunner to replace De Gea between the sticks. His shot stopping ability and reflexes are certainly on par with De Gea, and if De Gea does leave, Oblak will certainly be a fine replacement for the Spaniard.
