# Rooney would consider MLS move

Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney is in America at the moment on the Red Devils’ pre-season tour, where they will face the likes of Club America, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

The club play the first of their matches at 4am (BST) on Saturday and have spent the last few days training in Seattle – amongst them, new signings Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian, as well as Memphis Depay and academy product Sean Goss.

On Thursday, some of Rooney’s words on United and the MLS made it into a Seattle newspaper. He was talking about how the MLS is something which could appeal to him once his Old Trafford career comes to an end:

“I’m obviously concentrating on Manchester United – but when that time comes \[contract expiry\], that’ll \[MLS\] be something that I think about.”

“I’ll sit down with my wife and children and decide if it would be right for me”.

If Rooney were to move to the MLS at the end of his contract with Manchester United, he’d be following in the footsteps of high-profile players such as Kaka, Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo – all of whom he has played against in either the Premier League or the Champions League. Other notable MLS players who have enjoyed careers in Europe are Steven Gerrard and Landon Donovan.

The appeal of America as a home always seems to be large in England but the lucrative wage packets are also bound to be seen in good light, as they would be anywhere – and many players see the American ‘soccer’ merry go-round as an opportunity to wind down in the twilight of their career.

Of course, another United legend who has spent time playing in the MLS is David Beckham, who played for LA Galaxy at the same time as Robbie Keane, after time in Madrid and Milan. Beckham returned to Europe with PSG but he is so far an exception in his return to the European stage.
