It seems as though Manchester United have finally sorted out the midfield which has lacked op quality for several years now. Last Monday, United announced the double signing of Bastian Schweinsteiger, from Bayern Munich and Morgan Schneiderlin, from Southampton. But with these two being added to the midfield we already have, it has left United fans wondering what will be the pair in midfield next season. It looks as though Louis van Gaal wants to use two holding midfielders in his formation next year. So, let’s see what this could bring.
1) Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin
The two new lads could gel well together as a midfield pair. Schweinsteiger has 17 years experience at Bayern Munich, winning 8 Bundesliga titles as well as a World Cup with Germany. He is a midfield general and could be quite the acquisition. With his experience in the game, Schweinsteiger seems capable of managing himself in the Premier League and he can also learn more from Schneiderlin, who has spent 8 years at Southampton, starting out in England in League One as a teenager, and reaching the Premier League with them in 2012. Schneiderlin seems to be the perfect replacement for Michael Carrick, and can learn from players such as Carrick and Schweinsteiger who both have plenty of experience in the game. Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin could be the perfect pair in midfield this year for us.
2) Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin
Like Schweinsteiger, Carrick has had years of experience, especially with United in the Premier League. He is one of the two remaining from the Champions League final in Moscow. Carrick was vital to United last year, and our slim title hopes desperately faded away when he was injured – we lost 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, and then went on to lose 1-0 against West Brom, and 3-0 at Everton. Carrick controls our midfield and the game itself. He would be sorely missed if he was to automatically lose his place due to the two new signings. Schneiderlin would work well with Carrick; he adds some pace to the midfield, something Carrick doesn’t have all that much of any more. Schneiderlin seems to be the fitting replacement for Carrick and it seems that Schneiderlin could be in our midfield for years to come.
3) Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick
This is a midfield duo with bags and bags of experience as well as honours won in their career. Both Schweinsteiger and Carrick would be a dream in the United midfield, and I’m sure many fans have been dreaming of a duo like this for years. Perhaps though, it has come a few years too late. With Schweinsteiger turning 31 next month, and with Carrick turning 34 next week, it seems that the two are coming towards the end of, what have both been glittering careers. Neither will bring pace to the midfield but both will bring absolute class, and it is safe to assume that these two will work well in midfield together. However, it seems we might only see this as a duo a few times this season. But I’m sure it will still put fear into the opponent. The two could be key in games when United need to be absolutely clinical in possession.
4) Marouane Fellaini and Bastian Schweinsteiger
This midfield duo would be perfect at Old Trafford, and looks like it would cause destruction. But, as we know already, Fellaini as a holding midfield might not be perfect after his debut season at Old Trafford. It seems Fellaini is better when used further forward, after a terrific campaign last term. But, maybe this could work. Fellaini brings power and has his advantages in the air, as we seen last season and it can come in excellently when it comes to defending. Schweinsteiger and his experience in the game also seem to be very useful. He is a household name and can prove to be a good buy for United. But, for the first three games of the season we won’t see Fellaini, due to a red card vs Hull in the final game of the season. This could be seen as a dominant duo during the Champions League group games, should we qualify – their physicality against more hard-hitting teams such as Fenerbahce could be key.
