# Gruelling Pre-Season Tour of China Planned for 2016

**Manchester United could be facing a pre-season tour of China next season with the club’s sponsor’s keen to exploit the huge fanbase in the Far East, [according to reports in the *Telegraph*](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/11771517/Manchester-United-face-pre-season-tour-to-China-in-2016.html).**

United’s commercial growth has helped establish the club as a global superpower but at what cost? The sponsors who invest vast amounts in the club understandably want to make the most of such a profitable market as the one in China. A potentially gruelling trip could have a negative effect on the team’s ability to start the following season in the best possible condition.

Louis van Gaal was the most vocal critic of the club’s tour of the United States last summer, believing the excess travelling his team undertook undermined the start to their campaign. The manager was able to convince the hierarchy to do things his way this time around but it wouldn’t be surprising to find him expressing concerns ahead of the 2016 tour.

United haven’t embarked upon a tour of China, and its neighbouring countries, since 2009 and with the region being a key part of Chevrolet, the club’s main sponsor’s marketing strategy, there will increasing pressure on the club to return once again. Another major sponsor, Aon, are also hoping to grow their brand through the club visiting the Far East.

With Euro 2016 also on many players’ agenda next summer, a well-structured and balanced tour will be needed if van Gaal’s side are to be ready to go ahead of the 2016/17 season. Whether the manager will be able to exert as much influence on the organisation of the tour remains to be seen.
