# United legend wants Lloris as de Gea replacement

Manchester United great, Peter Schmeichel, believes that the club should not sign Ajax goalkeeper, Jasper Cillessen, claiming that Louis van Gaal “doesn’t 100 per cent trust” his fellow countryman.

Instead, the Dane has urged van Gaal to sign Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris to replace David de Gea if he does indeed leave for Real Madrid. [Speaking on talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/exclusive-manchester-united-manager-louis-van-gaal-doesnt-trust-transfer-target-jasper), he said: “I’d like Lloris to go there. He fits the bill. He’s exactly what Man United needs, someone who’s brave enough to sweep up.

“With \[Thibaut\] Courtois he is one of only two keepers who controls their box and that’s what United need more than anything. And he’s proven in the Premier League and that’s very important.”

Although Schmeichel said that Cillessen was a good ‘keeper, he had his doubts over whether van Gaal really believes that the 26-year old is his man. “Cillessen is a good goalkeeper, no doubt about that, but, if you go back to the World Cup, they \[Holland\] took him off ahead of a penalty-shootout \[against Costa Rica\],” the Dane said.

Schmeichel added: “That tells you there is something there and that van Gaal doesn’t trust him 100 per cent. I wouldn’t like a goalkeeper like that at Manchester United.”

Lloris and Cillessen are both fine goalkeepers, and both would be solid replacements if de Gea does leave for Madrid. Both have the attributes that van Gaal looks for in a goalkeeper – great reflexes, quick off the line and comfortable with the ball at their feet. However, the edge remains with Cillessen, who has worked with van Gaal before and should adapt quickly to his methods.
