# Champions League Group B: Our Opponents

Louis van Gaal and Manchester United were informed of their Champions League group stage opponents for this season in Thursday evening’s draw, which took place in Monaco.

United were in Pot 2 alongside the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal, with big teams in Roma and Wolfsburg in Pots 3 and 4 respectively – so a ‘group of death’ scenario was always likely. Unfortunately, that’s exactly where United are; to progress to the round of 16 as will be expected by supporters of one of the world’s very biggest clubs, the Red Devils will have to come away in either first or second place amongst the following sides…

The main talking point in this game will be return of Memphis Depay to his former club – he of course left the Dutch champions for Old Trafford this summer in what was United’s first piece of transfer business of the window. Memphis has impressed in United colours so far and will be hoping for a happy return home to the Netherlands alongside fellow countrymen Daley Blind and Louis van Gaal.

A long-haul flight is the main worry here, as well as the hostile atmosphere that eastern-European sides always produce, especially in European crunch ties. They are currently top of the Russian Premier League and beat Sporting Lisbon over two play-off ties to make it to the group stages. Igor Akinfeev and Alan Dzagoev will be their key players when they come up against the Red Devils.

The Bundesliga runners-up of 2014/15 seem out of place in Pot 4 of Europe’s elite competition and their inclusion in Group B means we’re up against three tricky but negotiable ties. It’ll be interesting to see if Kevin de Bruyne is still with the Germans come the end of the transfer window on Tuesday as it could impact the group massively. Bas Dost and Ricardo Rodriguez will certainly be players to watch as our boys travel to Germany.
