# Manchester United vs. Swansea City: Last five meetings

Manchester United will travel to Swansea City on Sunday afternoon for what could be their most difficult game of the season so far.

United’s record against Swansea hasn’t been great recently, but Louis van Gaal’s side will be hoping to carry on from their good performance against Club Brugge in midweek.

Here, we take a look at the interesting array of results from the teams’ last five meetings.

**Swansea City 2-1 Manchester United, February 2015**

This was just one of two Premier League defeats in almost four months for United, but the loss left them with a lot of work to do in pushing for Champions’ League football.

Ander Herrera’s strike briefly gave United the lead before Ki Sung-Yeung equalised, and the game looked as though it would in a draw. However, a slightly fortunate goal handed Swansea the win, with Jonjo Shelvey’s long-range effort deflecting in off Bafetimbi Gomis.

Despite controlling the game for most of the second half, United were unable to create the opportunities to score and ultimately win. Swansea’s resolute defending after the first half was perhaps deserving of the\
victory.

**Manchester United 1-2 Swansea City, August 2014**

There was great expectation for United to start life under Louis van Gaal in style, but it quickly became apparent they would not translate their pre-season form into the Premier League.

Ki Sung-Yeung opened the scoring at Old Trafford, which seemed to derail United after a decent start. Wayne Rooney equalised soon after the break with an acrobatic effort, but even that couldn’t inspire van Gaal’s team\
to victory.

United rarely threatened the Swansea goal and looked vulnerable defensively, which was proven with less than 20 minutes to go. Gylfi Sigurdsson’s struck the winner after some poor defending and the ball falling fortunately to him, but the away side were deserved victors.

**Manchester United 2-0 Swansea City, January 2014**

After home defeats to Everton, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur at home in the Premier League in the previous month, United went into this game with their sense of invincibility at Old Trafford well and truly eradicated.

The result was therefore far from a foregone conclusion, but United produced a decent performance that not many would have foreseen. Adnan Januzaj was a key performer in the side that day, as he helped to create the two early second half goals for Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck.

This was the kind of performance United fans were expecting of their side in most, if not all, home matches. However, the result failed to inspire an upturn in form, with David Moyes’ side continuing to struggle again\
afterwards.

**Manchester United 1-2 Swansea City, January 2014**

A lot of United fans were hoping for a good run in the FA Cup under David Moyes, with the hope that the new manager might take a different approach to the competition, with Sir Alex Ferguson not winning the\
trophy in his final nine years in charge.

However differently Moyes might have looked at the FA Cup did not matter. The narrative of the game was not something you would associate with United, with Wayne Routledge’s strike rewarding the visitors’ early pressure in the 12th minute.

Javier Hernandez soon equalised, but it didn’t seem to change the pattern of the game too much. There was rarely any assurance from United’s attack that they would take the lead, and much of the game suggested\
the tie would end in a draw.

Swansea looked dangerous in the closing stages of the match though and, in contrast to United teams of recent years, David Moyes’ team were on the receiving end of a late winner. Wilfried Bony’s 90th minute header earned victory for the away team and progress to the FA Cup fourth round.

In what looked a tricky first Premier League game for United under David Moyes, the Reds produced a fantastic performance, with Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck playing starring roles.

van Persie scored on the half volley from close range just after the half hour mark, which was quickly followed by a tap in from Danny Welbeck.

The 2-0 half-time lead was extended in the second half by another superb effort from van Persie. The Dutchman picked the ball up deep in the opposition half before carrying it towards the edge of the area and firing\
into the top corner.

Wilfried Bony added a consolation with a neat finish on 80 minutes, but Danny Welbeck restored the three-goal advantage with a neat chip just before full time.
