# Manchester United’s Champions League Squad

Manchester United have announced their 23-man UEFA Champions League squad for 2015-16.

The Red Devils qualified for this season’s elite competition by coming 4th in the Premier League last season and then beating Club Brugge 7-1 on aggregate in the playoff for the group stages of the tournament.

United’s group, for which the draw took place last week, is a challenging yet manageable one; Drawn against PSV Eindhoven CSKA Moscow and VfL Wolfsburg, Louis van Gaal and his men will have to perform well but will be expecting to reach the round of 16; as will the fans.

Here is the squad in full:

**Goalkeepers:** David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Sam Johnstone.

**Defenders:** Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, Guillermo Varela, Paddy McNair, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind

**Midfielders:** Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Ander Herrera, Nick Powell, Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Juan Mata

**Attackers:** Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney, James Wilson

The main talking points are the inclusions of Guillermo Varela, Nick Powell and of course, David de Gea; whilst Victor Valdes has been frozen out completely in favour of Sam Johnstone, who was very impressive during the club’s pre-season tour this summer.

Varela had a great season on loan to Real Madrid Castilla last season and Zinedine Zidane wanted him to move to the club permanently, but van Gaal obviously has bigger plans for the young Uruguayan.

Powell was not given a Premier League squad number, so it was thought he’d be staying in the under-21 set-up, but he’s been included as one of the 23 here.

David de Gea, as one of the very best goalkeepers in the world, would be expected to play now that hjs future is settled, for now at least, so it’s brilliant to see him included.

As for Valdes… It’s well and truly game over for the Spainiard
