# Manchester United 3-1 Liverpool – Post-Match Comments

Manchester United secured all three points against Liverpool in the latest chapter of their bitter rivalry with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford, putting United second in the Premier League table.

A cagey game burst into life in the second half, with Daley Blind opening the scoring for the Reds after a well-worked free-kick routine caught the Liverpool defence half asleep. Ander Herrera doubled the lead for United with a fiercely struck penalty after Joe Gomez had brought down the Spaniard in the penalty area.

It looked as if United were in the driving seat and looking comfortable, but Christian Benteke gave Liverpool a lifeline out of nowhere with a stunning bicycle kick. However, Anthony Martial, on his debut for United, produced a Thierry Henry-esque finish in front of the Stretford End to seal all three points for Louis van Gaal’s men.

Man of the match Blind, van Gaal and Ashley Young all spoke to Sky Sports after the match, and here’s what they had to say:

**Louis van Gaal:**

“I think we played better in the first half, we had far more control but we didn’t create so much. I think there were two chances and a lot of possibilities in the third and fourth phase but the last pass was not so good.”

“That’s why I changed Memphis, to improve that last pass and also Mata. The second half has been characterised because of the goal, which was a consequence of our meetings and our tactical sessions on set-plays. That has paid off now and I am very happy with this goal because that is what we have practised in many training sessions. The first goal is, of course, the goal which decides the match because, after that, they have to come at us and we get more space.”

“We could score the second goal because of that. It was very good running in behind from Ander Herrera and a fantastic pass from Michael Carrick so I was very proud. Also, the way Ander scored the penalty was fantastic.”

“The goal of Anthony \[Martial\] – not a bad goal, I think! It was a good match for him because Liverpool had to come so he had a lot of space. It was more easy to bring him on but he did alright. He scored a marvellous goal and I have seen also that, physically, he can play in the Premier League.”

**Ashley Young:**

“I think, especially in the second-half, we thought we were in control for big parts of it, we had to keep our nerve, knowing they could score at any point, which they did.”

“But we’ve got that strength in depth and that character to get ourselves back into the game and what a goal it was by Anthony.”

“With the defeat against Swansea, it was disappointing to go into an international break on a loss, so we know these games are feisty and we had a new signing, so when you get the three points it’s the best feeling.”

“We’re leaving it up to Morgan Schneiderlin to be the translator, but if he \[Martial\] talks like that on the pitch that’s all we need.”

**Daley Blind:**

“I’m very happy for him \[Martial\], of course. He’s the new guy, we help him a lot and I think he was very happy to make his first goal and what a goal it was.”

\[On his goal\] “I practice a lot, and now it went in and so I’m happy to help the team in that way. Sometimes it goes in, sometimes not. Normally I have to take a touch, but I got it in once, so it’s good.”
