# Rooney a doubt for PSV clash

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is a major doubt for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven, according to manager Louis van Gaal.

The striker missed the Reds’ 3-1 victory against Liverpool yesterday after reportedly picking up a hamstring injury in training, and the manager is unlikely to risk the fitness of England’s all-time record scorer by rushing him back into action.

van Gaal confirmed that the club would assess Rooney’s injury ahead of the trip to Holland on Monday, but hinted that the 29-year old would not play a part against PSV. [Speaking to MUTV](https://www.apple.com/), the Dutchman said: “He \[Rooney\] is injured so we have to take care of him. I think he is very important for us and I don’t to take any risks so that’s why he doesn’t play today \[against Liverpool\].”

“I don’t think he will play against PSV Eindhoven, but maybe he shall play at Southampton. We have to wait and see if he can play against PSV because we still have three days to go.”

If Rooney is ruled out of the clash against PSV, it could cause a selection headache for van Gaal. Anthony Martial is the Reds’ only recognised striker at the moment, and despite the Frenchman having a wonderful debut against Liverpool, the Dutchman has said that he will be easing him into the side.

With James Wilson expected to head out on loan soon, that leaves Marouane Fellaini as United’s only recognised striking option – and the Belgian isn’t what you would call a natural striker.
