# Romero accepts backup role

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has accepted the fact that he will be second choice behind David de Gea at Old Trafford.

The Argentinian number one joined the Reds this summer on a free transfer from Sampdoria, with Louis van Gaal looking to strengthen his options as de Gea was linked all summer long with a move back to Spain with Real Madrid.

And Romero was the main beneficiary of the situation, starting in United’s first six games of the season as de Gea was frozen out due to a ‘lack of focus’, according to van Gaal. However, de Gea has since signed a new contract with the Reds after a mooted move to the Spanish capital fell apart spectacularly on transfer deadline day.

Since then, Romero has been consigned to the bench as the Spaniard regained his place in the starting eleven. Despite this, the Argentinian has reacted positively, saying that it was obvious that de Gea would go straight back into the team once his future had been resolved, as he had been the undisputed number one over the past few years.

“I took the matches when I was given the chance to play, but when de Gea renewed it was obvious he was going back to the team,” the 28-year-old told Argentinian paper [Olé](https://www.ole.com.ar/seleccion/obvio-volvia-banco-chiquito-romero_0_1443455853.html).

“de Gea won the place over the years he was there. The coach talked to me and I understood perfectly.”

Romero is in Argentina’s squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, as the Albiceleste face Ecuador on Thursday before tackling Paraguay next Tuesday.
