# Carrick: “Moscow is a special place”

Manchester United’s Michael Carrick says that winning the Champions League back in 2008 in Moscow remains his greatest achievement in football.

Ahead of United’s trip to the Russian capital to face CSKA Moscow on Wednesday, Carrick spoke to the club’s monthly magazine [Inside United](https://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2015/Oct/michael-carrick-says-manchester-united-champions-league-win-in-moscow-is-his-best-football-memory.aspx) about their opponents, and also reminisced about that dramatic night in May 2008, where the Reds won the European Cup for a third time in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.

“I feel, for me, it’s by far my greatest achievement so far and the best feeling I have ever had was in Moscow,” the 34-year old said. “It’s a special place for me and everybody else who has got such great memories from there. But it’s a tough place to go to play against CSKA. It won’t be easy and it’s quite a long journey with tough conditions but we’ll look forward to it.”

Carrick is also confident that the Reds have the squad to handle the tough fixtures coming up, with a crucial Manchester Derby against City following straight after the gruelling trip to Moscow.

“That’s the thing,” said the England international. “That is what the Champions League throws up. You have got big league games the weekend straight after and that is something you have got to adapt to. We have certainly got the squad to accommodate that.”

Carrick is only one of two survivors left from the matchday squad that faced Chelsea in the Luzhniki Stadium – captain Wayne Rooney is the other. They both will have fond memories of that night, but they will have to be at their best if they are to secure all three points on Wednesday night.
