Manchester United are keeping tabs on promising Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Grujic, according to the Daily Mail.

The Reds sent their Belgrade-based scout to file a report on the 19-year old as he played in the local derby against FK Rad Beograd last Saturday, and the scout would have been impressed by what he saw, as Grujic scored a 30-yard screamer in a 3-0 win.

Grujic, who is 6ft 3in and plays in central midfield, has been compared in Serbia to Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic and played a key role in Serbia’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup win in New Zealand earlier this year.

Despite signing Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer, United could still do with strengthening their midfield, with Schweinsteiger and Carrick both on the wrong side of 30 and a young and upcoming prospect would be a perfect partner for the energetic Schneiderlin in midfield.

Red Star want at least £3 million for Grujic, according to the report, and it could represent fantastic value for money if he develops into a fine player. If van Gaal can sign the Serb, he could feasibly be allowed to be loaned back to Red Star for a season or be developed under the Dutchman’s tutelage at Carrington.
