the former Dutch national team manager splashed the cash at Old Trafford this summer in an attempt to better last season’s finish. In came Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Matteo Darmian, Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin.

However, the Red Devils also had the chance to sign Gaitan, who would have added yet more freshness up front.

United had agreed a deal with the Portuguese for their no.10, but boss van Gaal decided at the last minute to change his transfer targets and target someone else.

Over the past few seasons, the attacking midfielder has been getting better and better and would have slotted into this United side with ease.

In the Champions League, Gaitan has scored two goals in two games and has completed 10 take-ons, proving how difficult he is to defend against.
