# Rooney given United testimonial

Wayne Rooney has been [granted a testimonial](https://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2015/Oct/Wayne-Rooney-granted-testimonial-at-Old-Trafford.aspx?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=ManUtd) by Manchester United, with all proceeds from the game going to charity.

The testimonial was granted after fans wrote to the club asking them to recognise Rooney’s stellar contribution to the club, and it will take place next August at Old Trafford.

It will mark Rooney’s 12 years at the club, and all proceeds will be distributed to the United and England captain’s nominated charities through the newly created Wayne Rooney Foundation – the NSPCC, Alder Hey Childrens’ Hospital, Claire House Hospice and the Manchester United Foundation.

The 30-year old expressed his excitement and hoped that the fans would turn out in force to raise as much money as possible for charity:

> I would like to thank everyone involved in making this testimonial become a reality. Most of all I want to thank the fans for all their incredible support for me and the team since I joined the club. The match night will obviously be special for me and my family but I hope it will be a night of celebration for all involved and that we can also deliver one or two surprises.

> Most of all I hope the fans will come out in force and help raise as much money as possible for these amazing charities, all of which are very close to my heart for different reasons.

Ed Woodward, United’s vice-chairman, added:

> I am delighted that United fans will be able to celebrate Wayne’s amazing years at the club in this way. From his sensational debut hat-trick to the latest of his 236 goals, he has been a central figure in what has been one of the most successful periods in the club’s history, winning everything from the Club World Cup, the Champions League and League Cup, to his five Premier League titles.

> Wayne has selected good causes very close to his heart and the club is delighted to play its part, in providing Old Trafford as a fitting stage for such a game.

The opponents for Rooney’s testimonial will be revealed in due course, but the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3290587/Manchester-United-hand-Wayne-Rooney-testimonial-12-years-Old-Trafford-captain-wants-face-old-club-Everton.html) reports that the man from Croxteth wants his boyhood club Everton to be the opponents. Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also understood to be on the shortlist.
