Memphis dropped from Netherlands squad

Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has been dropped from the Netherlands squad for their upcoming friendlies against Wales and Germany.

Memphis has had an unconvincing start to life in Manchester, and his form has seen him dropped from Danny Blind’s squad in the wake of the Oranje’s failure to qualify for Euro 2016.

And the former Ajax manager criticised the 21-year old, who was seen as a future Oranje star back home, for his lack of teamwork while on international duty. According to the Daily Mail, he said:

In football you must function in a team. He [Memphis] doesn’t always do that. I think he is a player for the future, but there are other issues to look at. Perhaps Louis van Gaal has also said something.

Memphis has had a rough couple of weeks, being dropped from the United side due to a lack of form, before picking up a knock during the Reds’ penalty shoot-out defeat against Middlesbrough last Wednesday. Being dropped from the Oranje squad is a major setback, but he definitely has the talent to make his way back into the reckoning, and it’s just a case of building his confidence back.

Memphis’ United team-mate Daley Blind retains his place in the Holland side, and will go on international duty in mid-November as the Oranje aim to rebuild ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
