# Lingard explains goal celebration

Jesse Lingard has revealed that the celebration that accompanied his first Manchester United goal was a tribute to Any Given Sunday character Willie Beamen.

The 22-year old broke the deadlock in the 5th minute of the Reds’ 2-0 victory over West Brom on Saturday afternoon, which puts United one point behind Manchester City, Arsenal and Leicester City at the top of the Premier League.

The goal capped off a fantastic week for Lingard, with the Warrington-born attacking midfielder having assisted Wayne Rooney’s winner against CSKA Moscow during the week.

And Lingard celebrated his goal with a “shark dance” alongside team-mate Daley Blind. The dance may have bemused some fans, but it is a tribute to the [dance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2VxTqIhjYk) performed by Beamen, played by Jamie Foxx in the 1999 American football drama.

Lingard explained the reason behind the dance on his Instagram account:

> [Proud to get my 1st goal for the club, most importantly we got the 3 points. The celebration was from the film any given sunday. Let’s hope he continues to come up with some unique celebrations to mark his future goals.
