# Injury concerns grow following international break

Manchester United could be without eight first-team players for Saturday’s visit to Watford as Anthony Martial and Michael Carrick both suffered injuries whilst on international duty.

As reported by [ESPN](https://www.espnfc.co.uk/manchester-united/story/2717213/anthony-martial-and-michael-carrick-among-united-injuries), 19-year-old Martial had to be replaced by Antoine Griezmann by manager Didier Deschamps in his nation’s 2-0 defeat to England at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night after receiving a knock in the England penalty area.

And despite [Deschamps playing down](https://www.espnfc.co.uk/france/story/2716493/manchester-uniteds-anthony-martial-on-crutches-after-game) the severity of the injury, the £36million summer signing from Monaco was seen leaving the stadium on crutches.

Vice-captain Carrick also had to be carried off on a stretcher during England’s 2-0 defeat to Spain on Friday night with fears that the 34-year-old may have suffered ligament damage that could result in the midfielder being out until the New Year.

Other injury concerns included defensive stalwart Chris Smalling missing the France game with a minor knock received against Spain whilst Marouane Fellaini was withdrawn from the Belgium squad with the unspecified injury that also saw him miss the Red Devils’ last league game, a 2-0 win against West Brom.

The remainder of the injury list is taken up by James Wilson, who has been out since being replaced at half-time in the Capital One Cup exit to Middlesbrough, alongside Paddy McNair, who was injured during the last international break after suffering an abdominal strain with Northern Ireland.

Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia are both long-term absentees as the former continues his recovery from a broken leg received against PSV in September, whilst the latter has recently undergone foot surgery.
