van Gaal and United to discuss future

Manchester United will sit down with Louis van Gaal to discuss the Dutchman’s future in January, according to the Guardian.

van Gaal has said that he will be retiring at the end of his tenure at Old Trafford in 2017 to spend more time with his wife, but he has admitted that it is hard for him to be definitive about his future with United.

And the Dutchman has been under pressure lately, with fans and pundits alike stating that recent results have been underwhelming and United’s current style of play is boring and unfit for a club that has been traditionally known for its attractive, gung-ho attacking style.

The meeting in January will determine what path the Reds take in search of their next manager, with differing strategies being drawn up to cover every eventuality, including van Gaal staying on for another couple of years if he decides to renew his contract.

The Guardian go on to say that the Glazers are content with the Dutchman’s work at United so far and they believed he has fulfilled the demands placed on him when he took over in the summer of 2014, which was to rebuild the squad and stabilise the club after a tumultuous season under David Moyes.

They also state that if Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola becomes available in the summer, United will not chase the Spaniard because of their respect and admiration for van Gaal – although that could all change if results go downhill.

However, if the Dutchman brings a 21st Premier League title and reaches the semi-final or final of the Champions League in the next two seasons, both sides would not mind van Gaal staying on for a couple more seasons.
