# Post-Match Comments: Liverpool 2-0 Man United

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said that the way Liverpool scored their two goals was ‘cheap’, and bizarrely claimed Marouane Fellaini was one of United’s best players on the night.

The Reds will have a mountain to climb after succumbing to a two-goal defeat at Anfield tonight. Daniel Sturridge slotted home a penalty to give Liverpool the lead in the first-half after Memphis Depay was adjudged to have impeded Nathaniel Clyne in the box.

And United’s dismal performance was compounded in the second half by a woeful clearance by Michael Carrick, which allowed Roberto Firmino to stab the ball past David de Gea and give Jürgen Klopp’s men a healthy advantage ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford.

Speaking to *BT Sport* after the game, Van Gaal said:

> *I have to say that Liverpool created an atmosphere that was fantastic. They played very good in the first half and we could not cope with the pressure. They had chances but David de Gea was fantastic. But we conceded a cheap penalty.*
>
> *In the second half, we changed the shape and we had much more contribution to the game. We didn’t create much chances and they scored another cheap goal. 2-0 is a very difficult result for us but we also have to create an atmosphere like Liverpool \[in the second leg at Old Trafford\].*

Van Gaal also bemoaned the decisions by referee Carlos Velasco Carballo to give the penalty, as well as missing what looked to be offside in the build-up to Liverpool’s second goal:

> *When you are very sharp with the penalty, you also have to be very sharp with the offside, it was a nasty goal for us. It is for me a cheap penalty. Liverpool deserve the goals, but how they achieved it was cheap.*

Finally, the United manager talked about Marouane Fellaini, who was caught by TV cameras to have elbowed Emre Can off-the-ball in the final seconds of the game:

> *I haven’t seen it \[the incident\]. I have to say Fellaini was one of the best players on the pitch and I’m very sorry when he makes a mistake like that.*
