# United To Cash In On Memphis

Whatever happens to Manchester United at the season’s outcome, the issue of Memphis Depay’s shortcomings over the course of the term has to be addressed by the United hierarchy.

Signed by Louis van Gaal as the poster boy for the Dutchman’s revolution last summer, Depay has failed to shine. Now, it would seem United are set to cut their losses on the 22 year old and listen to offers, with van Gaal reportedly running out of patience with the winger, in a season that has seen him make the headlines off the pitch rather than on it, beset by a struggling to adapt to the English game, the pressures he has faced at the club, and an issue with his weight.

His confidence shone in the early part of the season, notably United’s European games, where he flourished against recognisable tactics. But it became dangerously close to arrogance, his request to take the number 7 shirt bringing a huge burden on his shoulders that he then failed to live up to, as both an individual wearer of such a coveted shirt, and as a team player, most obvious in his failure to track back and aid the defence that was blown apart by Arsenal at the Emirates in October.

Subsequently, he has been out of the senior squad picture as Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial push him closer to the exit door. Such an outcome would present a major disappointment to the club and the player, given his accomplishments in Eredivisie that led to a big money move to England last summer.

Furthermore, his lavish lifestyle, that saw him turn up to training in a luxurious [£240,000 Rolls Royce](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/memphis-depay-causes-stir-man-7076025), led to some senior members of United’s staff feeling the need to take him to one side and discuss his lifestyle, emphasising the necessity to focus on his on-field performances first and foremost.

Bagging 7 goals this season (five of which in Europe) is a sparse outlay for a player of his billing. With Lingard and Martial flourishing, and Juan Mata waiting in the wings, Memphis’ time as a Red may be running out fast.
